National Coloring Day! September 14, 2020

The Arts open the heart and Education opens the mind. Put them together and what do you have? A holistic and fun learning experience.

Coloring opens up the part of the brain that has the ability to balance both sides of the hemispheres and create mindfulness.

“But it’s fun!” you say. Yes it is. Learning can be fun when the expressive-arts are involved, and that is why I combine story-time and coloring with science, history and even music.

An electroencephalogram (EEG), a test used to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain, has shown that the human brain is affected when we color due to the response of the amygdala.

The amygdala is located in the center of the brain near the hippocampus.

In human development, both are considered to be older parts of the brain that help us monitor our emotions particularly fear and what is “perceived” as fear.

“When a 4th grader reports that she felt she “was going to die” from test anxiety, she’s telling the truth. The responses of her autonomic nervous system are the same whether she’s taking a math test or sensing actual physical danger. – Mindful Schools”

Base emotions such as anger and fear rise up from the amygdala and the hippocampus. “Fight, flight or freeze” are triggered states from the autonomic nervous system that cause us to react if not curtailed in the moment.

Coloring not only calms the system, but it can help to train the brain to redirect such extreme and what could be harmful emotions, to the more developed pre-frontal cortex of the brain. This area supports reflection, attentiveness and empathy rather than impulsiveness, thoughtlessness and anxiety.

Only when we are quiet inside can we fully apply ourselves to the present moment. To teach children how to be more mindful in their life empowers them to live a good life.

The simple Act of Coloring can assist in acquiring that sense of peace, and story-time encourages healthy relationships with nature, friends and family.
